The preschool years are a critical time for children’s emerging sense of self, and the way they are spoken to can have a significant impact on the way that they see themselves. As teachers, the way we speak to children and the words we choose are vitally important; we must seek to use words that enhance children’s sense of self rather than tear it down (positive phrases). We all know that throughout the preschool day there is plenty to do, and often behaviour to correct, but we must seek to do it in a way that acknowledges and validates the feelings of the children (positive phrases). Here are a few ways to turn routine and correction into opportunities to validate, teach and connect. Positive phrases can make all the difference!
